Southern Province · Bentota

Bentota River offers one of the most accessible river safari experiences in Sri Lanka, combining calm waterways with rich mangrove ecosystems. The river flows into the Indian Ocean at Bentota, creating a mix of freshwater and saltwater conditions that support a wide range of wildlife.

A typical Bentota River Safari takes place on a motorboat guided by a local operator. The journey moves through narrow mangrove tunnels, open water sections, and small river islands. These mangroves act as natural barriers that protect the coastline from erosion and provide breeding grounds for fish and other aquatic life.

Wildlife is a key part of the experience. Visitors often spot water monitors swimming along the banks, crocodiles resting near muddy edges, and a variety of birds including kingfishers, herons, and eagles. The calm waters also make it easier to observe these animals at close range without disturbing them. Some tours include stops at small cinnamon plantations, where guides explain how cinnamon is harvested and processed.

The safari usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours depending on the route and stops included. Morning and late afternoon trips are the most popular, as wildlife activity tends to be higher and the light is better for photography.
